Will AI have a bigger impact on healthcare than Penicillin?

Healthcare is the hottest area for investment in AI, with 270 deals made since 2012. With an aging population, increasing demand and rising drug costs, many areas within the industry are changing and AI is making unimaginable innovation possible. In 2012, robots started winning competitions when it came to screening cancer with deep neural networks. Beyond disease diagnosis, AI is also speeding up drug discovery processes, improving clinical trial efficiency, personalising treatment plans and improving access to affordable healthcare. However, to deliver Machine Learning optimisation, the industry must collect end-to-end patient journey data such as initial diagnosis through to treatment outcomes. Will AI ultimately enable a better quality of life?

Discussion Points

  • AI is improving diagnosis, treatment design, drug discovery and routine process automation, where are the innovations taking place in each area?
  • How can qualified medical professionals be taught the latest use of technology on a large scale and be kept up to date in a faster and faster changing world?
  • Is there a need for an overarching industry adoption strategy or should AI adoption be left to market forces and local initiatives?
  • How can data on patients, treatments and drugs be best gathered from multiple health providers and normalised for analysis while privacy is maintained?
  • What are the risks associated with the current methods of collecting data that may not represent the whole population?
