BenevolentAI, founded in 2013, creates and applies AI technologies to transform the way medicines are discovered and developed. BenevolentAI seeks to improve patient’s lives by applying technology designed to generate better data decision making and in doing so lower drug development costs, decrease failure rates and increase the speed at which medicines are generated. The company has developed the Benevolent Platform™ - a discovery platform used by BenevolentAI scientists to find new ways to treat disease and personalise drugs to patients.

BenevolentAI is HQ’d in London with a research facility in Cambridge (UK) and further offices in New York and Antwerp. BenevolentAI has active R&D drug programmes from discovery to PhaseIIb in disease areas such as ALS, Parkinson’s, Ulcerative Colitis and Sarcopenia.

The Role

The Software Engineering team is focused on applying engineering rigour and innovative design to the BenevolentAI software platform. We embrace a modern microservice architecture on Kubernetes in order to orchestrate a machine learning platform that empowers drug discovery.

We are hiring for all levels of experience, from entry-level to lead software engineers.

Primary responsibilities

  • Design and build software to solve complex data requirements and user needs across biology, chemistry, AI, and data science.

  • Promote engineering best practices, such as: code reviews, test-driven development, pair programming, etc.


We’re looking for someone with...

  • Strong in at least one programming language (Python / Java / JavaScript preferred).

  • Basic algorithms and data structures for software development.

  • Basic understanding of machine learning and/or distributed systems.

  • Experience working with at least one of the following software systems:

    • web frameworks, databases, APIs, microservice architectures

  • Experience in at least one of the following software domains:

    • frontend development, backend development, data processing pipelines

Preferred (not required) Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of biology / chemistry, and experience working with biomedical data.

  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, ideally with a focus on drug discovery.
