Senior Software Engineer, Evaluation

BenevolentAI, founded in 2013, creates and applies AI technologies to transform the way medicines are discovered and developed. BenevolentAI seeks to improve patient’s lives by applying technology designed to generate better data decision making and in doing so lower drug development costs, decrease failure rates and increase the speed at which medicines are generated. The company has developed the Benevolent Platform™ - a discovery platform used by BenevolentAI scientists to find new ways to treat disease and personalise drugs to patients.

BenevolentAI is HQ’d in London with a research facility in Cambridge (UK) and further offices in New York and Antwerp. BenevolentAI has active R&D drug programmes from discovery to Phase II in disease areas such as ALS, Parkinson’s, Ulcerative Colitis and Sarcopenia.

The Role

The Engineering team is focused on applying engineering rigor and discipline to our growing software platform. We embrace modern microservice architecture and use Kubernetes to orchestrate a machine learning platform that’s tailored to empower drug discovery scientists. We are keen to hear from both entry level and experienced Software Engineers with experience and a passion for algorithms and distributed systems design with an emphasis on scalable backend database systems.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design a metric and evaluation system architecture that satisfies complex data and user requirements from different product areas in biology and chemistry, and across AI and data science.

  • Lead a team of 2-3 engineers and work closely with our VP of Data Science

  • Design and develop large-scale data storage, data transformation, visualization, and user-facing applications softwares.

  • Design an automated evaluation system to periodically measure and report metrics.

  • Develop and operate systems with microservice architecture in our on-premise Kubernetes cluster and cloud platforms.

  • You know and promote rigorous engineering practices in your daily work, such as code reviews, test-driven development, pair programming, etc.

  • You enjoy working in a team of diverse skills, including working with non-technical peers and helping out with your expertise.

  • You are a team player you value collective progress and have the respect and trust of your teammates.

  • You are an excellent communicator, especially when it comes to colleagues from other specialities.

We’re looking for someone with...

  • Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence (BSc/MSc/PhD) or related academic discipline.

  • 3 or more years of experience in a product team, in a commercial environment, as a software engineer or relevant roles.

  • Proven track record of building complex applications, dealing with complex data, and delivering user experience with attention to code quality and testing.

  • Experience in leading a development team (formally or informally).

    Proficiency with many of the following

  • Language Python, Java

  • Backend flask, spring, SQL/NoSQL/Graph Databases, REST APIs, GraphQL

  • Infrastructure and DevOps Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD

    Additional experience with the following is a plus

  • DevOps, service mesh, ETL, DSL, automated pipeline, workflow orchestration, database administration, service-oriented architecture.

  • Machine learning

  • Biology and biological data

  • Life science/pharma industry
