Bioinformatics Data Scientist

BenevolentAI, founded in 2013, creates and applies AI technologies to transform the way medicines are discovered and developed. BenevolentAI seeks to improve patient’s lives by applying technology designed to generate better data decision making and in doing so lower drug development costs, decrease failure rates and increase the speed at which medicines are generated. The company has developed the Benevolent Platform™ - a discovery platform used by BenevolentAI scientists to find new ways to treat disease and personalise drugs to patients.

BenevolentAI is HQ’d in London with a research facility in Cambridge (UK) and further offices in New York and Antwerp. BenevolentAI has active R&D drug programmes from discovery to PhaseIIb in disease areas such as ALS, Parkinson’s, Ulcerative Colitis and Sarcopenia.

The role

We are looking for an individual with a proven track record of integrating biology and chemistry data-streams from a variety of lab-based environments. You will have worked in or have a good working knowledge of, biomedical science research. As an integral member of our drug discovery team, you will streamline data-processes that support our internal candidate-drug programmes and our AI-driven drug discovery pipeline. Working closely with scientists from a range of drug discovery disciplines, you will make a significant contribution to our drug discovery efforts through your integration and development of efficient and intuitive analysis tools and data-workflows. Your familiarity with both internal and external drug discovery data will allow you to provide high quality information for our predictive tools. Based at the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge (UK), you will work closely with experts in artificial intelligence, informatics, biological and chemical sciences to help devise creative ways to reimagine the way medicines are discovered.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Fully integrate Dotmatics suite into the Benevolent discovery process

    • Work closely with internal teams and external CROs to set up flexible tools and user-friendly processes, which allow scientists to maintain ownership of their data, workflows and quality assurance checks

    • Integrate data that may be derived from laboratory equipment, Excel, Prism, IDBS-ActivityBase and external Chemistry and Biology ELNs

    • Integrate compound management, ordering and inventory, across internal and external repositories

    • Management of licences, updates and training

    • Based on your knowledge of the drug discovery process, you will champion the assessment of alternative tools to further improve and reimagine the process

    • Your primary focus will be on drug discovery data types, but there is scope to broaden the role to include other domain knowledge and consultation across BenevolentAI teams

We’re looking for someone with...

  • Experience of Drug Discovery Informatics; e.g. relevant degree or MSc/Res qualification in IT or the life sciences

  • Commercial experience in supporting drug discovery informatics; preferably +3yrs of data management type activities in a drug discovery environment

  • An understanding and demonstrable business use of data-management tools; e.g. Dotmatics, XLfit, Prism, IDBS-ActivityBase, Chemistry and Biology ELNs

  • Familiarity with commonly used informatics tools and Scientific workflow systems; Pipeline Pilot, Knime, programming languages such as SQL, Excel-VBA, Python and Web APIs

  • Understanding the challenges of bulk data transfer between systems; system integration and data warehousing

  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively across broad-discipline internal teams and external-vendors

  • Evidence of developing, integrating and proving workflows, their confident rollout and user support

  • Experience of communicating closely and effectively with project teams to ensure efficient data analysis, assured data quality and smarter data visualisation

  • A track record of understanding the data needs of drug discovery teams and suggesting innovative solutions to improve data flow, data availability, resolve assay analysis and data integration issues

  • Evidence of continued learning and acquisition of new skills to constantly develop your skills and knowledge.
